“Euro Brand Embraces Tesla-Inspired Technology: Revolutionizing Charging Methods in the United States

Tesla’s charging technology is being integrated into the next-generation of EVs by two legacy U.S. automakers, starting in 2025. Tesla’s Supercharger network is a global network of fast-charging stations that allows Tesla owners to charge their vehicles on the go. The Supercharger network is compatible with every Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X from May 2019 onwards. Tesla’s charging connector design is being shared with other automakers to encourage them to adopt the technology and help make it the new standard in North America. Tesla’s charging connector is called the North American Charging Standard. Tesla’s Supercharger network became the largest 150 kW+ public fast-charging network in Europe overnight after recently expanding its Supercharger pilot program for non-Tesla EV owners. Rivian, an electric vehicle maker, has also joined Tesla’s charging network, bringing Tesla’s technology closer to becoming an industry standard.

The North American Charging Standard (NACS) is a charging standard introduced by Tesla that is becoming the preferred charging plug in North America. The NACS is the most common charging standard in North America, with NACS vehicles outnumbering CCS two-to-one. The Tesla Connector, which is already CCS capable, has proven to be a superior design for places where no 3-phase electricity is common, like North America. Tesla’s charging connector design is being shared with other automakers to encourage them to adopt the technology and help make it the new standard in North America. Tesla’s Supercharger network uses the NACS connector, which is half the size and twice as powerful as CCS. The CCS (Combined Charging System) is the agreed-upon standard that every manufacturer selling in North America has adopted for DC fast charging. According to the Department of Energy, there are about 17,000 Tesla Supercharger connectors in the US and Canada, compared to about 11,000 CCS combo ports. While NACS is becoming more popular, CCS still has more fast-charging stations offering the CCS connector.
