A boat carrying residents returning from a wedding capsized on the Niger River in northern Nigeria, killing more than 100 people, including women and children. The exact number of dead passengers is unknown, but it is believed to be around 100. The boat capsized early Monday on the Niger River in the state of Kwara close to neighboring Niger state, and passengers were still reported missing as of Tuesday. The boat had been “suddenly overpowered by river waves and smashed against a tree,” according to a local daily.

Many of the victims drowned because the boat sank at about 3 a.m. and few people were aware of it until hours later. The passengers were returning from an overnight wedding ceremony in the village of Egboti in Niger state. Rescue efforts and the search for survivors have been ongoing since Monday night. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
